Dragon Ball Super (ドラゴンボール超 (スーパー); Doragon Bōru Sūpā) is the direct sequel to Dragon Ball Z. In parallel with the production of the anime is also released its manga🥭 version.
The drawings of places and characters, as well as the plot, were created by the original author of Dragon Ball, Akira Toriyama, while everything else is created by Toyotaro, creator of the first version of Dragon Ball AF. The series is currently being produced, like the old series, by Toei Animation. The plot of this series takes place 4 years after the saga of Majin Buu, in the 6 years between the defeat of the monster and the beginning of the 28th edition of the Tenkaichi Tournament.
Dragon Ball Super is broadcast in Japan on Fuji TV from July 5, 2015 to March 25, 2018. A monthly manga is also produced of the series on V-Jump, run by Akira Toriyama and Toyotaro. Kazuya Yoshii sings the opening theme "Chōzetsu ☆ Dynamic!!!" and the Japanese band Good Morning America (who also performed in the final theme song of Dragon Ball Kai, Dear Zarathustra), sings the final one, "Hello Hello".
In Italy, the rights were purchased by Mediaset, and the series was broadcast on Italia 1 from December 23, 2016 to January 23, 2017, for a total of 27 episodes (i.e. the first two story arcs). Episodes 28 to 52 were broadcast from September 6 to October 10, 2017. From January 2 to January 23, 2018, a 24-episode block (episodes 53 to 76) concluding the Future Trunks Saga and the Intermezzo Saga is broadcast while the last 8 episodes with a double date on Saturday afternoons at 2:35 pm are broadcast from January 27 to February 17, 2018. From February 23, 2019 the first part of episodes of the Universe🌎 Survival Saga is broadcast, starting from episode 77 until episode 116 broadcast on May 26. The last block is broadcast a few months later; in fact, on September 7, 2019 it resumes with episode 117 to end the series on September 29 with the concluding episode 131.
The series began by showing the aftermath of the Majin Buu Saga, proceeding by telling the stories of the films Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods and Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection of 'F', considered as sagas and told in a different way. After the Frieza-related Saga, Sagas introducing the existence of the twelve Universes will follow.
The story is set 4 years after the defeat of Majin Buu, with Earth🌎 finally at peace. Son Gohan and Videl are married and Goku is forced by Chichi to work in the fields to earn money, as his father's fortune is almost exhausted, however thanks to Mr. Satan who gives him a monetary reward received from the state for saving the world, Goku can stop working and start training again, while Vegeta spends some time on vacation with his family, and then also returns to training with the goal of overcoming his rival Kakaroth.
Meanwhile, the God of Destruction, Beerus, awakens after 39 years of sleep, and together with his master Whis goes in search of a certain Super Saiyan God seen by him in a vision, not before having destroyed some planets on a whim, under the dismay of the Kaiohshin. On Bulma's feast day, Goku goes to train with King Kaioh of the North, and just then Beerus makes his way to him. The two battle it out and Goku gets the worst of it, despite his transformation into Super Saiyan 3. At this point Beerus and Whis arrive on Earth, where Bulma's birthday party is taking place. Vegeta remembers seeing the God of Destruction before and tries to make sure he has a good time.
Unfortunately, however, Majin Buu manages to anger him by not giving him any pudding, so Beerus easily knocks him out, as he does Piccolo, Android 18, Tenshinhan, Gotenks, and Gohan. When Bulma is hit in the face by Beerus who was about to kill Vegeta, the latter has an outburst that triggers a transformation into a more powerful Super Saiyan 2 than the third level Super Saiyan forcing the God to use 10% of his power.
When Goku arrives on Earth he summons Shenron to ask for information about the Super Saiyan God who turns out to be a very powerful warrior whose legend has been forgotten and who needs the energy of 5 pure Saiyans to summon him. Once reached this stage, Goku faces Beerus getting used to his new form but he doesn't succeed in defeating the God of Destruction who however decides not to destroy the Earth as promised.
While Beerus is back asleep Whis often visits Bulma on Earth🌎 to sample the many dishes she offers her, so Vegeta takes the opportunity to get trained and become more powerful. When Goku learns that his rival is training with Whis, he asks for the same opportunity and Whis agrees. In an undefined place in the universe, Sorbet decides to resurrect the space tyrant Frieza to make the army the most powerful ever again. Thanks to Earth's dragon balls and their technology Frieza is put back together after being resurrected in pieces. After the resurrection, the tyrant decides to train for 4 months to take revenge on Son Goku and Mirai Trunks.
Six months after the resurrection, Frieza heads to Earth with a thousand soldiers. The Z warriors have no problem in facing them all until the arrival of Tagoma, who, having been Frieza's guinea pig for his training, has undergone a sudden improvement that has led him to be stronger than all the warriors on Earth. He is however defeated by Vegeta once he arrives on Earth together with Goku. To protect Gohan Piccolo stands between him and Frieza's death ray and dies.
As soon as Goku arrives on Earth🌎, Frieza immediately reaches his final form, succeeding in his intent to fight on equal terms with the Saiyan. Later on, both Goku and the tyrant decide to fight at the maximum of their strength, transforming themselves respectively in Super Saiyan Blue and Golden Frieza. After an initial domination of his opponent, his power progressively decreases and Goku manages to overcome him, but he is knocked down by a ray of Sorbet. Vegeta then enters the scene and easily knocks down Frieza, also in Super Saiyan Blue version. Despite his superiority, Frieza destroys the Earth and only Whis' ability to go back in time allows Goku to throw a Kamehameha at Frieza, bringing him back to hell.
From Universe 6, the god of destruction Champa, brother of Beerus, and his assistant Vados, sister of Whis, appear and a martial arts tournament is held between the five strongest warriors of the two universes, with the planet Earth of Universe 7 and the possibility to use the Super Dragon Balls in possession of the gods to make a wish.
The Universe 7 warriors are: Son Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, Majin Buu and Monaka (a fighter chosen by Beerus who will really only serve as a stimulus to Goku's training). Universe 6 features: Botamo, Frost, Magetta, Cabba and Hit. Before the fights there is a written test that excludes Majin Buu from the fights. The first fight is held between Goku and Botamo that sees Goku as the winner. Later Goku has the better against Frost but is beaten thanks to an irregular poisoning caused by a stinger hidden in the opponent's hand.
Goku is replaced by Piccolo who also falls into Frost's trap. It will be Vegeta who beats Frost and later Magetta as well. The Saiyan, however, can't do anything against Hit who then goes against Goku (readmitted to the tournament after the unfair elimination). Hit prevails on the opponent thanks to the time jump. Goku is able to understand the technique of the enemy and tries to equal him but Hit increases the interval of the time jump. Goku tries to overcome his limit by reaching Super Saiyan Blue with Kaioken x 10.
The fight is at very high level but just on the most beautiful moment the Saiyan gives up realizing to be treated as a puppet by Beerus. The last clash is between Hit and Monaka. Hit, like Goku, can't stand Champa's orders so he pretends to be hit by Monaka and makes Universe 7 win the tournament. At the end of the tournament Zeno makes his first appearance and, happy with the tournament, congratulates Goku and proposes a tournament between all the 12 Universes in the future. Of course Universe 7 gets a chance to make a wish and it is decided to revive Universe 6's planet Earth🌎.
After a small saga featuring Goku and Vegeta battling in space against the Super Water Being, the fourth saga of the series sees Trunks falling victim to the threat of Black Goku in his future, a character with the likeness of Goku who joins him in the parallel dimension of the Z warriors and clashes a first time with Goku himself.
Suddenly Black is brought back by the Ring of Time that he wears on his finger; the rings of time, in four copies (one for each dimension created by time travel) are guarded by Gowasu, Kaiohshin of Universe 10🌎 towards whom Beerus, Whis and Son Goku head to understand more about Black, having an aura similar to that of Zamasu (Gowasu's assistant). Goku challenges Zamasu and simply beats him by turning into Super Saiyan 2. Zamasu proves to be evil and unsuitable to play the role of Kaiohshin, in fact he does not fully understand what is the task that will be his successor to Gowasu: he should support the birth and development of life; Zamasu instead believes that the task of a god is to bring justice and dreams of punishing inferior beings with death for their violence and inability to exploit knowledge.
Goku, Vegeta and Trunks travel to the future to defeat Black, here they also find Gowasu's assistant. The three Z warriors are at a distinct disadvantage against Black and Zamasu, since the former has acquired the Pink Super Saiyan transformation and the latter has become immortal. The good guys, in order not to succumb, are forced to retreat by fleeing into the past. Told what happened in the battle to Whis, he and the god of destruction go to Gowasu fearing for his life. Zamasu intended to kill the master, so he could reunite the dragon super spheres and realize his crazy dream without anyone preventing him. Beerus disintegrates him with a single blow.
Afterwards, the three Saiyans return to the future for the final battle with Zamasu and Black. Here the two reveal their insane "0 human" plan. Black is the Zamasu of Goku's time line, who was not destroyed by Beerus because he was the harbinger of the time ring; the second is the Zamasu of Trunks' future. Black tells that he reunited the spheres and exchanged his body with the Saiyan's one and killed him immediately after, then he went to the future and killed Gowasu. Having obtained an alliance with his counterpart, he then killed all the gods of the universe and procured immortality for his companion and destroyed the dragon balls.
They return to the past to find a way to counter Zamasu's immortality. While Vegeta trains Goku learns the Mafuba technique. Back in the future, together with Bulma, Trunks tries to lock Zamasu in a container with a seal using the Mafuba but it fails because the seal has been forgotten in the other timeline where Goku and Vegeta come from. Black and Zamasu decide to fuse thanks to the Potara Earrings creating a powerful and immortal being. Goku manages to unleash a Kamehameha that hits the mortal part of Zamasu but the being only loses the ability in half of his body.
Vegeta and Goku try to hit him but in vain, so they also resort to the fusion that will only last an hour for the mortals. The clash between two formidable warriors begins: Zamasu (fusion) and Vegetto. The Saiyan's fusion with the power of Super Saiyan Blue lasts less than expected and Goku and Vegeta go back to being divided. There seems to be no solution to defeat him but it is Trunks who breaks Zamasu in two with a sword of energy created by the spirit of the remaining earthlings. Zamasu disappears but now he is present in the sky and in the whole Universe. Only at that moment Goku remembers that he has a button in his pocket that will make Zeno come to him. In this way Zeno decides to eliminate everything, including Zamasu. Goku, Vegeta and Trunks together with Bulma and Mai manage to return to the past. Goku decides to introduce Zeno of the Future to Zeno of his time.
Goku decides to go to Zeno to ask him to hold the tournament between the twelve universes so he can fight against stronger and stronger opponents. After some time the High Priest appears in front of Goku and Beerus to ask them to find three fighters for a tournament that will be held to make Zeno of the Future understand how it works and what a tournament is. He also explains that the future Tournament of Power will be used to eliminate the losing Universes since Zeno believes there are too many of them. So Goku decides to call Son Gohan and Majin Buu with him. The demonstration tournament for Zeno is held in front of all the deities of the other Universes. Three fighters from Universe 7 take turns to fight against three from Universe 9. The first clash is held between Majin Buu and Basil and is won by the fighter from Universe 7🌎.
Afterwards Gohan faces Lavenda who has the ability to use poison. So the Saiyan is blinded but still manages to find the strength to put down the opponent. The duel ends in a draw as Gohan also loses consciousness after the poisoning has spread throughout his body. The last clash takes place between Son Goku and Bergamo. The Saiyan proves superior but Bergamo is able to absorb the enemy's blows and use the energy to increase his size. Goku wins the fight using the power of the Super Saiyan Blue.
Zeno seems happy with the fights but suddenly a warrior from Universe 11 appears and wants to challenge Goku. His name is Toppo and he declares that he wants to protect his Universe since his job is to do justice. Goku doesn't want to be his enemy but Toppo seems to be determined and the fight gets tough. The two give off such incredible power that the High Priest stops the duel to prevent one of them from being killed.
At the end of the demonstration it is explained how the Tournament of Power will work: it will last 48 minutes and will be held in 48 hours. Universes 1, 5, 8 and 12 will be excluded since they have a higher power value than the others. Also, there will be 10 fighters for each Universe and they will all fight together in a Battle Royal. So, back in Universe 7🌎, Goku and Gohan have the task of finding the warriors that will help him save the Universe. Besides the two of them, Goku manages to convince Majin Buu again who, for this occasion, starts to train himself by losing weight. Later he also recruits Krillin and Android 18 who make him understand how important teamwork is. Goku then goes in search of Android 17 and manages to convince him as well. In the meantime Piccolo, who obviously didn't refuse the invitation to the Tournament, starts to train Gohan, making him regain the supreme power that he found back in the Planet of Kaiohshin to fight Super Buu. Not only that but Gohan seems to have become stronger than his father. A few hours before the tournament the Universe 7 team discovers that Buu has fallen asleep and will not wake up for another 2 months. Goku is forced to recruit Frieza as his enemy.
Once resurrected for 24 hours by Baba, Goku and Frieza challenge each other. The latter has learned to control the Golden form so that he has no limits. The God of Destruction of the Ninth Universe, Sidra, meanwhile, hires an army to assassinate Frieza and Goku. To the most powerful of the warriors he gives a small portion of Destructive Energy as a backup plan. The army is taken out by the two. The last warrior hurls the Destructive Energy🔋 at Frieza who surprisingly manages to free himself, and as if that wasn't enough he hurls it at Goku who only thanks to Beerus' intervention manages to clear his name.
Everyone leaves for the Tournament of Power, and immediately Universe 9 and 11 are cancelled. The first to leave Universe 7 is Krillin. Gohan and Piccolo fight as a pair. Frieza proves to be cruel and merciless, just like Frost. Caulifla's strength and Kale's hidden power are discovered. Goku, looking for powerful opponents, runs into Jiren. Goku pushes himself to the limit and is defeated. Creating a Genkidama Sphere, Jiren repels it by making Goku fall on it. Thus, Goku manages to obtain the energy needed for the Ultra Incomplete Instinct.
In this form Goku manages to keep up with Jiren. This form doesn't last long but Goku is helped by Hit who will be thrown out by Jiren. Universe 6 is in danger and the Caulifla-Kale pair, challenging Goku, see themselves in trouble and resort to potara, creating Kafla. Goku regains the Ultra Instinct and eliminates his opponent. Android 17 and Android 18 manage to beat part of Universe 2, of which Brianne de Chateau is the strongest. Universes 2 and 6 are eliminated at the same time.
Meanwhile, Tenshinhan and Muten are also out, with the latter taking part in many battles that have seen him prevail over his opponent due to his experience. Universe 11 is still in play with Jiren, Toppo, and Dyspo. The Fourth Universe hides fighters with special skills but Universe 7 manages to eliminate it. The Third Universe, with robot-like fighters unite into one being forming Aniraza. The remaining fighters of the Beerus Universe join forces and eliminate this Universe as well.
Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Android 17 and Frieza are left against the three from the Eleventh Universe. Dyspo is eliminated along with Gohan who sacrifices himself to be thrown out of the arena by Frieza. After Vegeta has unleashed all his power against Jiren, Toppo, having found the strength of the God of Destruction, prevails over Frieza and Android 17. Vegeta manages to eliminate Toppo. Android 17 self-destructs to protect Goku and Vegeta from Jiren. Vegeta, having exhausted his strength, is eliminated by Jiren. Goku, against Jiren, reactivates the Ultra Instinct arriving at Full Ultra Instinct and prevailing over Jiren. However, Goku loses the powers obtained from that form, but is helped by Frieza and Android 17, who seemed to have disappeared. The final battle sees Goku and Frieza throw themselves at Jiren by all exiting the arena. The only warrior left is Android 17, who desires the restoration of all the erased Universes. Frieza is brought back to life permanently by Whis after his excellent performance.
In both the Japanese and Italian versions, many of the original voice actors have returned to voice their characters, except for those who have passed away. For example, in the Japanese version Masako Nozawa returns to voice Goku and his sons, while in the Italian version Paolo Torrisi (deceased in 2005) is replaced by Claudio Moneta.
In the Italian dubbing the variations of terminology are maintained, such as the names of some characters or techniques.
The episodes broadcast in Italy were purchased with a clause that did not allow the episodes to be broadcast with an Italian version of the theme song. In fact, the original Japanese theme song was broadcast in Italy. Despite this, Giorgio Vanni, author of the theme songs of the other series, wanted to publish on his youtube channel the video of the theme song he had prepared, entitled Dragon Ball Super Kamehameha.
Although both the manga and anime versions of Dragon Ball Super tell the same plot, there are some differences between the two versions.
