Paikuhan

October 20, 2021 7 min read

Paikuhan

Paikuhan (パイクーハン, Paikūhan) is the champion fighter of the Western Galaxies, who handily defeated the Hell Rebels alongside Son Goku during the Otherworld Martial Arts Tournament when they staged a revolt.🏆

He first appears as a central character in the Otherworld Martial Arts Tournament Arc of the Dragon Ball Z anime, appearing only as a filler character.

Overview

Etymology

His name comes from the Japanese gastronomic term for pork ribs with boiled rice (排骨飯, Paikūhan), which in turn comes from the Taiwanese dish Páigǔ fàn (排骨飯, Páigǔ fàn).

Concept and Creation

It is stated in the concept art by Akira Toriyama that Paikuhan is a character based on Piccolo. Even in the absence of staff for the production of the anime, it is decided to "use Piccolo as a reference for facial expressions".

Personality

Paikuhan behaves noticeably different each time he appears. When he first appears, he is a very intelligent fighter. He uses this to his advantage by planning attacks. Paikuhan even goes so far as to correct Goku on his "careless" dodging and lack of concentration, offering advice even in battle. He hardly speaks a word, but later opens up during his fight against Goku. Paikuhan has similar heroic characteristics to Goku as well, and fights for good. Goku compares his personality to Piccolo's.

In the feature film Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn! Goku and Vegeta, he is seen increasingly jealous when Goku makes it to the battle against Janemba and he does not. He is also seen impatient when he asks Janemba where he came from, and he is shown to become very angry when things don't go his way (an example is him yelling as he tries to get escape from Janemba's crystal prison).

In Majin-Boo's Arc, aside from playing smart, he also underestimates Little Boo quite a bit, a recklessness which he would obviously regret.

Appearance

Paikuhan appears as a tall, muscular, green-skinned man. He dresses in white clothes, a blue T-shirt underneath them. He wears brown boots, brown belt with a golden circle in the center, and a tall turban type hat that has a matching golden circle in the middle. He has flat ears similar to Freeza's and no visible nose. When the hat is removed, black dots are visible on the top of his head.🧊

Biography

Origins

Paikuhan was once a fighter living in an unknown location in the western quadrant of the Universe. After dying in an unknown heroic death, Paikuhan was allowed to travel to the planet of the West Kaio, where he trained hard and became the best student of it.

Other World Martial Arts Tournament Arc

Main article: Other World Martial Arts Tournament Bow.

Paikuhan is seen shortly after when Goku and the Northern Kaiō arrive for a meeting with the Great Kaiō at the same time as he and Kaio sama of the South, who is revealed to be on bad terms with the Northern Kaiō. After a discussion in which the Southern Kaiō suggests that Goku and Paikuhan have a fight, the Great Kaiō appears and asks him if he and Goku can go to Hell to control some villains who were causing trouble, namely Freeza, Great King Kold, Cell, Reacoom, Burtta, Jheese and Ghurd. In Hell, Goku defeats the Ginyu Special Combat Forces and Paikuhaneasily defeats Freeza, Big King Kold, and Cell, much to Goku's surprise.👑

He participates in the Martial Arts Tournament of the other world where he wins all his fights very easily, until he has to face Olibu who represents a good fight, although Paikuhan finally beats him. In the finals he has to face Son Goku who transforms himself into Supersaiyan to the Maximum Power against which he takes off his weighted clothes (with weight) increasing his speed and strength, thus overcoming Goku. Paikuhan was winning thanks to his great arsenal of techniques, but finally when it seemed that Son Goku had won by dodging one of his best techniques and giving him an Instant Kamehameha that took him out of the ring, Kaio says that while fighting they both touched the ceiling and therefore would be disqualified.

Majin-Boo's Bow

Main article: Majin-Boo's Bow.

After Super Buu appears and starts a slaughter on Earth, Krilin and Yamcha are sent to the Planet of Big Kaio, where they meet Paikuhan and other deceased fighters. When Little Buu travels to Big Kaio's Planet during his search for Goku and Vegeta, Paikuhan risks his entire existence by approaching the mute monster along with Olibu and making hurtful remarks about him, not knowing about how terrible Buu is. Just as Little Buu prepares to destroy the planet with a Planetary Explosion, Paikuhan is saved at the last minute when Little Buu teleports to the Sacred Planet, having finally found Goku and Vegeta's Ki. Throughout the duration of the battle on the Sacred Planet, Paikuhan watches with the other dead warriors as the final incredible battle gets underway.

Paikuhan

The rebirth of fusion! Goku and Vegeta

Appearing in the movie helping the Z Warriors stop the Otherworldly threat Janemba, Janemba is at a higher level than him, so after testing the demon's strength, he goes to help Enma Daio and lets Goku and Vegeta defeat him. He then returns to give Goku and Vegeta time to do the 2 fusions (Veku (failed) and Gogeta).

Power

Paikuhan is very strong and at least equal in strength to Goku in his full Supersaiyan form at Maximum Power. He defeated Freeza, Cell and King Cold with simple moves. In addition to his great strength, and most notably speed, he has powerful techniques, including the Fiery Strike, which is similar to Goku's technique, the Kaio-ken, in that it provides a brief but incredible boost of energy, speed and strength. However, Paikuhan is extremely inferior to Little Boo and Super-Janemba.🔥

Transformations

Super-Paikuhan

Super-Paikuhan (スーパーパイクーハン, Sūpā Paikūhan) is a state he assumes in Dragon Ball Heroes after he has been training with the Northern Kaio. In this state, his attire changes to one more similar to that of his master, the West Kaio, with the bandages coming out of his turban covering the lower part of his face.

His exact power in this form is a mystery, but it has increased to such an extent that he is able to block an attack from Broly transformed into Supersaiyan 4 at Maximum Power.

Techniques and skills

  • Flight: Like most characters, Paikuhan has the ability to fly using his ki.
  • Ki Wave: The most basic form of ki throwing.
  • High Tension: One of Paikuhan's Blast 1 in the Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and Raging Blast 2 video games.
  • Maximum Power Energy Ball: A yellow energy ball shot from both hands. Paikuhan used it against Little Buu.
  • Fiery Breeze: A combination of high-speed kicks.
  • Trap Trigger: Paikuhan places his right hand on his back and charges a green energy field. He then waves his hand forward and fires a barrage of quick energy blasts at his opponents, causing a large amount of damage. Paikuhan used it against Janemba in Fusion Reborn! Goku and Vegeta.
  • Nova Strike (Similar): Paikuhan uses an attack similar to Freeza's Nova Strike in a fight against Goku Supersaiyan in the episode Who Will Win? Goku or Paikuhan. He wraps his body in a blue sphere of energy and lunges at the opponent using the blue sphere as a shield.
  • Fiery Strike: Paikuhan surrounds himself with fire and attacks the opponent continuously. This attack was used to defeat Cell in the Otherworld.
  • Hyper Tornado: Paikuhan starts spinning at high speed, drills towards his opponents, and then locks them in a powerful tornado.
  • Kiai: Paikuhan blows an invisible wave of ki through his mouth. He used it to dispel Olibu's Energy Ball.

Paikuhan

  • Thou Shalt Not Pass: The attack consists of blocking the enemy from passing. Then you give him a flying kick to the head and send a blast of air at him. Finally, the enemy is attacked with a Trap Trigger, damaging him severely.
  • Ki Burst: First the user brings his elbows back, then raises his arms and charges enough energy in his hands to quickly launch numerous Ki Waves at the opponent. The user swings his arms to charge the attack, which differentiates it from the Ultimate Volley Burst. He uses it against Goku in the episode Who Will Win? Goku or Paikuhan.
  • Fire Glow: This is Paikuhan's ultimate technique; a powerful fire attack taught by Kaio Sama West. The warrior shoots an immense firestorm of fire from his fists, his most powerful attack. he uses this attack several times during his fight with Goku in the Otherworld Tournament. Arguably, using this move for the third time is what ultimately leads to his loss, as by then Goku had managed to figure out that Paikuhan cannot move when this technique is being used.
  • Wild Sense: One of Paikuhan's Blast 1 in the Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and Raging Blast 2 video games.
  • Super Energy Bomb: An energy sphere used by Paikuhan in the movie Fusion Reborn! Goku and Vegeta.

Appearance in video games🎮

Paikuhan

Paikuhan has appeared as a playable character in the PSP game Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai and its sequel Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai - Another Road.

He made an appearance in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 and Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3, marking his appearance in video games outside of the Shin Budokai series. Paikuhan is also selectable in Dragon Ball Z: Buu's Fury. He also appears in the PS2 game Dragon Ball Z: Infinite World and is also a playable character in Dragon Ball Z: Bakuretsu Impact, Dragon Ball Z: Dragon Battlers, Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2 and Dragon Ball Heroes. He also appears in Dragon Ball Z: W Bakuretsu Impact and later in Legendary Pack 1, the eleventh paid DLC for Dragon Ball XENOVERSE 2.

Curiosities

  • The fact that Paikuhan could defeat Cell with his Fiery Strike, but not with Goku (a warrior that Cell himself defeated without even fighting at full strength) could be because Cell was too confident and/or did not raise his ki when fighting. Although that doesn't explain why Cell didn't come back from the blood fountain to fight for real.
